Found an old coin in a drawer, a jar or your change and wondering if it's worth anything? Take a photo and CoinLoupe tells you what it is — country, year, mint mark, denomination and metal — with an estimated value range from worn to uncirculated and a confidence level, so you know when to look closer.

What it does
- Identify a coin from a photo — take it with the camera (a circle guide helps you frame it) or pick an existing photo. Add a photo of the back for a sharper answer.
- The details collectors look at — country, year, mint mark, denomination, series, composition, weight, diameter and mintage, plus a rarity badge (common, scarce, rare, very rare).
- An estimated value range in US dollars — from heavily circulated to nice uncirculated, with one line on what drives the price. It is always labelled as an estimate.
- Honest confidence — every result shows a match percentage. When the app isn't sure, it shows other coins it could be and suggests what photo would help.
- Photo tips when the date or mint mark can't be read, and no scan is used if the photo turns out not to show a coin or the server fails.
- Your collection — save coins with quantity, condition notes and notes; search, filter by country and sort by recent, value or year. Unlimited, kept on your phone.
- Share a result as a card with the coin photo, name and estimated range.
- Try it without a coin — a bundled example (a 1909-S Lincoln cent) shows a full result, including the Pro sections, without using a scan.
Who it's for
- People who inherited a jar or album of coins and want to know what's there before deciding what to do with it.
- Beginners sorting pocket change for silver, key dates and known varieties.
- Casual collectors who want a simple, private list of their coins with photos.
- Travellers with leftover foreign coins wondering what they are.
What it is not
CoinLoupe's identifications and values are AI estimates for information only — not appraisals and not offers to buy. A photo can't prove authenticity, and condition changes value more than anything. If a coin looks rare or valuable, have it checked by a professional grading service such as PCGS or NGC, or by a reputable coin dealer, before you buy or sell.
Honest pricing
Free, every day: 3 identifications a day, the full main result (identification, details, rarity, estimated value range) and saving to your collection with no limit. No card needed to try it.
CoinLoupe Pro adds unlimited identifications (fair use of 100 a day), a condition grade estimate for each coin, a checklist of valuable varieties and errors to look for, your collection's total estimated value with a breakdown by country, and CSV export.
Pro is either a monthly subscription with a 7-day free trial or a one-time lifetime purchase. There's no weekly plan. Prices are shown by Google Play in your currency, and you can cancel a subscription from Settings in the app, which opens Google Play's subscription page.
No ads, no account, no sign-up.
Privacy
When you tap Identify, the coin photo is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, which asks an AI model (Google's Gemini API) to read it and returns the result. Photos are not stored on our server. Your collection — photos, results and notes — stays on your device. Details are in the privacy policy.
FAQ
- How accurate is CoinLoupe?
- It depends mostly on the photo and the coin. Common coins with a clear date usually identify well; worn dates, hidden mint marks and rare varieties are harder. Every result shows a match percentage, and when the app is unsure it lists other coins it could be. Check anything important against a catalogue or a professional.
- Is the value it shows what my coin is worth?
- No. It is an estimated retail range from heavily circulated to uncirculated condition, not an appraisal or an offer. Real prices depend on condition, authenticity and the market. For a coin that may be rare, ask a professional grading service such as PCGS or NGC, or a reputable dealer.
- Is CoinLoupe free?
- Yes. You get 3 identifications every day, the main result and unlimited collection saving for free. Pro (monthly with a 7-day free trial, or a one-time lifetime purchase) adds unlimited scans with a fair-use limit of 100 a day, grade estimates, variety and error checklists, collection total value and CSV export.
- Does a bad photo use up a free scan?
- No. If the photo turns out not to show a coin, or the identification fails on our side, no free scan is used, and the app tells you so.
- Are my photos stored?
- No. The photo is sent to our server only to identify the coin, passed to Google's Gemini API, and not stored by us. Your collection stays on your phone. There is no account and no advertising.
- Does it work with coins from any country?
- It identifies coins from many countries, not only US coins, and the app itself is available in 32 languages. Values are always shown in US dollars. Less common world coins are harder to identify from a single photo, so add the back side for a better answer.
- Is there an iPhone version?
- Not at the moment. CoinLoupe is available on Android through Google Play.
