How to Delete Duplicate Photos on iPhone

Step 1 — Use Apple's free Duplicates album first

Open Photos → Utilities → Duplicates. iOS finds files that are exact or near-exact copies (same shot saved twice, re-downloaded images) and offers a one-tap Merge that keeps the highest quality version. This is free and safe — always start here.

Step 2 — Understand what Apple's tool will NOT find

The Duplicates album matches files, not moments. It will not flag:

Burst photos and rapid retakes of the same scene
Five slightly different angles of the same sunset
A blurry shot next to the sharp one you meant to keep

These "near-duplicates" are usually where the real gigabytes hide, and they need visual similarity analysis rather than file matching.

Step 3 — Clean near-duplicates with an on-device cleaner
