How to track days without a habit: a streak counter that survives a slip

Published October 22, 2026 · AppFactory Studio

"Day 12" is one of the most motivating numbers in quitting anything. A day counter turns an invisible effort — not doing something — into a visible thing you can protect. But a counter is only useful if it's honest about slips and counts the right thing. Here's how to set one up that keeps working after the first bad day.

This is general information about habits, not medical advice. NoMore is a tracker, not a treatment. Stopping some substances suddenly — heavy drinking in particular — can be medically dangerous; talk to a doctor before you quit, and seek professional support if a habit is harming your health or your life.

Step 1: Define exactly what you're counting

"Less phone" can't be counted. "No social media apps after 10 pm" can. Before you start, write down one sentence that makes a slip unambiguous: what counts, and when the day starts and ends. Vague rules lead to arguments with yourself, and arguments usually end with a reset you didn't need — or a slip you didn't log.

Step 2: Track three numbers, not one

NumberWhat it tells youWhy it matters
Current streakTime since your last slipThe day-to-day motivation
Best recordYour longest streak so farProof you've done it before
Total clean daysAll days without a slip, across every streakDoesn't reset — shows real progress

A counter that only shows the current streak makes a single slip feel like losing everything. With best record and total days on the same screen, a slip resets one number, not the whole attempt. That matters, because many people slip more than once on the way to quitting for good.

Step 3: Count hours at the start

The first days are the hardest and the slowest to count. A counter that shows hours and minutes ("1 day, 7 hours") gives you something to watch grow when "day 1" feels like it will never end.

Step 4: Put the number where you'll see it

The counter only helps if you see it at the moment of temptation. On a phone, that means a Home Screen or Lock Screen widget rather than an app you have to remember to open. On paper, it means the calendar on the fridge, not in a drawer.

Step 5: Decide in advance what happens after a slip

Step 6 (optional): Put a price on it

If the habit costs money — cigarettes, vapes, drinks, takeaway, in-game purchases — estimate the daily cost from your own numbers and track the running total. Saved money is concrete in a way that long-term benefits aren't.

When choosing an app, check four things: whether a slip wipes your history or keeps it, whether it shows best and total alongside the current streak, whether it needs an account, and what's free versus paid.

How NoMore does it

NoMore is our quit tracker, so weigh this section accordingly. On iPhone it shows a live clean-time counter — hours, days and months since your last slip — with one-tap daily check-ins and a slip log you can undo. It keeps your current streak, your best record and your total check-in days side by side, so a slip doesn't erase what you built. Tell it what the habit costs you per day and it shows money saved (your daily cost × your check-in days). You can track several habits at once, and the counter can sit on your Home Screen and Lock Screen as a widget and in the Dynamic Island as a Live Activity. There's no account and no sign-up; your record lives on your device.

Counting, check-ins, streaks and your history are free and are never locked behind Pro. NoMore Pro adds analysis: the weekday and time of day where your slips repeat, last week against this week, one thing to try next week, and an optional quiet heads-up 30 minutes before a window where slips keep happening. Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase, with prices shown in the app before you buy. No ads. NoMore is also on Android.

FAQ

How do I track days without a habit?
Define exactly what counts as a slip, then track three numbers: your current streak, your best record and your total clean days. Keep the counter where you'll see it, such as a phone widget or a wall calendar, and log slips honestly instead of hiding them.
What should I do with my streak counter after a slip?
Log the slip, restart the streak immediately, and note what happened just before it. Your best record and total clean days stay, so a slip resets one number, not the whole attempt.
Is a streak counter enough to quit a habit?
A counter is a motivation tool, not a plan. It works best together with knowing your triggers and having a replacement ready. For habits involving alcohol or drugs, or anything harming your health, talk to a doctor or a support service.
Is NoMore free?
Counting, check-ins, streaks and your history are free. NoMore Pro is optional and adds analysis of when your slips repeat and a heads-up before those times, as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
